Center for Plant and Life Sciences finalist for Arcus Award

St. Louis Community College’s Center for Plant and Life Sciences was one of six finalists for the St. Louis Regional Chamber’s Arcus Award for Achievement in Biosciences.

The Arcus Awards, presented on Feb. 23, celebrate the achievements of companies and honors leaders who make the St. Louis region a great place to work, live and invest.

Tioma Therapeutics Inc. received the award in this category. Other finalists were Cofactor Genomics, MediaBeacon Inc., Pfizer Inc. and Saint Louis University.

The award for achievement in biosciences was presented to a company or organization for creating an innovative product or service; achieving revenue or employment growth; raising investment capital; designing or constructing a significant building or infrastructure project; and/or providing other leadership to champion the bi-state St. Louis region’s world-class excellence in biosciences.

STLCC’s Center for Plant and Life Sciences is one of the college’s centers of excellence. It intersects business and industry to cutting-edge education and workforce training in the growing plant and bioscience industry. Established in 2006, the center moved into the Bio-Research Development and Growth (BRDG) Park on the Donald Danforth Plant and Life Science Center campus is 2009. Working with the Biotechnology program at the Florissant Valley campus, the facilities at the center are used to provide a pathway to employment in biosciences. It boasts a 94 percent placement rate post completion.

Also housed at BRDG Park, STLCC’s Contract Research Organization (CRO) collaborates with small start-up companies to assist with research needs by giving them access to cutting edge equipment within the center, but more importantly, by supplying them skilled hands at the bench in the form of interns that need the experience working in a real industry situation. In addition to offering an excellent training experience, opportunities for employment with many of these growing companies exist and students have gone straight from an internship to full-time employment.

The presenting sponsor for the Arcus Awards was Rubin Brown LLC.
