Jennifer Silverberg will discuss her career at the Peterson Lecture Series event Oct. 3 at St. Louis Community College-Meramec.

Former Riverfront Times staff photographer Jennifer Silverberg will be the guest speaker for the fifth annual Peterson Lecture Series at St. Louis Community College.

Silverberg’s lecture is slated 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Lecture Hall Room 102 at the college’s Meramec campus, 11333 Big Bend Road. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Silverberg grew up in the suburbs just north of New York City and got her first camera to take to sleep-away camp when she was 8 years old. She found the camp's small darkroom a cool, quiet refuge from the hot, sticky chaos of summer.

Her earliest experiences with photography revolve around her father, who was a serious amateur photographer. She was a young girl when he died and has few memories of him, but his images remain tangible. She always loved making photographs, and her work is a way to both express herself and stay close to him.

Silverberg moved to St. Louis at age 18 to attend Washington University. Graduating four years later with a degree in political science and women’s studies, she decided to make St. Louis her home. She had planned to attend law school, never imagining that photography could be a career. With little formal training, and a lot of drive, she landed a job at St. Louis’ Riverfront Times as its staff photographer. She was with the alternative weekly for more than 10 years. In early 2009, Silverberg launched her own business, navigating the waters of commercial and editorial photography.

Though she has outgrown her disdain for the outdoors, Silverberg says she will never outgrow her need to take pictures. She specializes in food, farm and lifestyle photography. She lives in southwest St. Louis City with her husband Joe and Claire, their cat.

This lecture series is sponsored by Kristen Peterson. She is a recognized St. Louis photographer who attended photography classes at STLCC. Peterson was so impressed by the education and experience she received at STLCC that she has made a commitment to help raise awareness of the quality arts programs offered at STLCC by sponsoring this annual free photography lecture series.
