Instructions to Graduates 2017
WEAR YOUR CAP AND GOWN TO CHAIFETZ ARENA
Please come dressed in your cap and gown, ready to take that special walk! Changing areas are not provided by the Chaifetz Arena. The cap is traditionally placed on the head so the mortarboard is horizontal to the ground, rather than perched at an angle. The tassel hangs on the right. Bobby pins work well to anchor the cap securely to the head. The cap and gown are yours to keep; do not return them to the bookstore. In addition:
- Please do not carry a purse or bag during the ceremony.
- All cell phones should be turned off.
- Balloons are not allowed in the Chaifetz Arena and will be confiscated at the door by the Chaifetz ushers.
PLAN TO ARRIVE AT CHAIFETZ ARENA BY
6 P.M., Saturday, MAY 20, 2017
Chaifetz Arena is located at One South Compton Avenue, at the corner at Market Street. All graduates and guests should enter the arena through the northside doors. Ushers will direct graduates to the right to the lower practice gym for lining up. Guests will be directed to the left toward arena seating.
Seven public parking lots or garages are located in the immediate vicinity of the Chaifetz Arena, providing covered and uncovered parking areas. (Parking lot #1 is a private lot for podium guests, and is not open to the public.) Parking will be approximately $6. Free shuttle service will be provided from the Olive parking garage (#2) at Olive and South Compton, which also has handicap parking. A designated drop-off/pick-up area is located on South Compton Avenue, on the east side of Chaifetz Arena.
GO TO THE PRACTICE GYM
Chaifetz ushers will direct you to the lower practice gym for lining up for the processional. Don't forget to bring your photo release card, which is located in your cap and gown packet. You must have a photo release card to hand to the announcer as you walk across the stage. Extra photo release cards will be available at the practice gym-however, to avoid long lines, bring your card already filled out. Graduates with cards in hand will be able to sit down in the bleachers to wait for the processional and won't have to stand in line for a new card.
PROCESSIONAL WILL START LINING UP AT 6:30 P.M.
Students will be split into two groups and lined up in random order for the processional; we do not line up in alpha order. When the processional starts, one group will exit the gym on the left; one group on the right. Graduates will walk down a long hallway and enter the Arena from two sides. Please stay in a tight line and keep up with the person in front of you to avoid delays in the processional. Faculty marshals will direct you to your seats.
Please remain standing until the emcee asks you to be seated. The audience will stand with you during the National Anthem. Everyone will be seated following the National Anthem.
CONFERRING OF DEGREES
The faculty marshals will lead two lines of students to the stage, on the left and right sides of the stage. Students will walk up the side steps, hand the photography card to the announcer, who will read the names. Students will then walk across the stage, shake hands with the chancellor, president and/or board member; pause for the photo; then exit the stage down the middle stairs and return to their seats from the middle aisle. You may be seated once you reach your chair. Please do not exit into the crowd to look for relatives. Graduates who follow you deserve as much courtesy as the first honorees, so please remain seated until the end of the ceremony.
The Chaifetz Arena is a handicap accessible facility. Call your Campus Access Office if you (the graduate) need accommodations as you participate in the graduation. Specify if you will be in a wheelchair, need a sighted person to assist you, a sign language interpreter or alternate format program (large print or Braille). Guests needing assistance should ask for a guest services host at the Chaifetz on May 20. The college does not provide wheelchairs for guests.
Bleachers and a limited number of folding chairs will be available in the practice gym, so you may sit down as you wait.

Please make arrangements with your family and friends to meet you outside near the north entrance, where you first entered the arena.
RECEIVING YOUR FINAL DIPLOMA
