No. We will not correct grammatical errors or mark every “mistake” in your writing. However, we know that grammar issues are a very real and valid concern for students, and if we see a pattern of errors in your paper, we will point those out and discuss those particular grammar rules with you.

We look at the “larger” issues of writing in your paper. For example, do you have a strong thesis? Are you truly responding to the assignment the instructor gave you? Does your writing flow? Are your paragraphs well developed and supported? Do you make a reasonable argument? As stated above, we certainly won’t ignore grammatical concerns, but we will focus first on the more complex elements of your writing.

We give every paper one thorough read. We will give you as much guidance and feedback as possible, but we want to make sure that the paper remains yours. However, during your initial session, if the Writing Specialist suggests that you make substantial revisions, he or she may recommend you return for a second session. If you visit for help with brainstorming and organizing, you’re also welcome to return with a draft.

No. Starting a paper is often the most difficult part of the process. We’re happy to help you brainstorm, create an outline or assist you in prewriting. Then, after you’ve written the paper, you can return with a draft to receive thorough feedback.

Yes. We have excellent handouts on citing sources and making a works cited page or bibliography in APA, MLA, Chicago, and other styles. We keep copies of the primary handouts in the CWC; after hours, you can still find copies on our bookshelf at the entrance to the CWC or access them on our website. You can also discuss any concerns you may have with a Writing Specialist.

1. Type, print out and read your paper before your session with a Writing Specialist. It can be easy to miss grammar and spelling mistakes, typos and even other, larger issues when reading your paper on a computer screen. Proofreading and reviewing your paper before your session with a Writing Specialist will allow us to focus on the areas in which you need the most help, rather than wasting your time discussing things you could have spotted on your own. Also, review your assignment sheet before coming in to verify that you are fulfilling the requirements. If you are unsure about the requirements or whether you are meeting them, you can discuss this with your Writing Specialist during your session.
2. Allow yourself enough time for revision. Students sometimes come in right before their papers are due. Consequently, either they do not have time to incorporate the feedback they have received before turning in their papers or, if they come during a busy time, they may not even have time for a session at all! To avoid this, come in at least a day or two before your paper is due. We also suggest that you allow yourself 30-60 minutes for the session, especially during peak periods at mid-term and finals.
3. Bring your assignment sheet. In order to help you determine whether your paper is fulfilling the assignment, we need to see the original instructions and criteria your instructor gave you.
4. Make notes about the feedback you are given. During your session, the Writing Specialist may address many different aspects of your paper. Be prepared to jot down notes that will help you remember what was discussed when you begin to revise your paper. We will also provide a “green sheet” with a summary of our suggestions.
5. Identify your own concerns. The best writers take an interest in their own creations. Think about what you struggled with while writing the paper or what problems you usually encounter during the writing process. Share these thoughts with the Writing Specialist and we will pay special attention to your concerns.
