Pruitt Enjoys Challenge of Learning New Things

David PruittSince the age of 17, David Pruitt has made a career of working with his hands.

A skilled tradesman and 24-year employee of the St. Louis Community College, Pruitt has held the position of lead maintenance mechanic at STLCC-Florissant Valley for nearly 15 years.

“Although I’ve worked on multiple campuses, Flo (Florissant Valley) is my favorite,” he said. “The people make it a great place to learn and work.”

Pruitt’s role requires him to tackle a variety of projects: from simple tasks like fixing soap dispensers to complex jobs such as campus renovations. With 15 buildings at STLCC-Florissant Valley, there is always something that needs to be done.

“It brings me great joy to see a project through from planning to completion and to know that the customer is satisfied with the work,” he said.

Throughout his career, Pruitt has strived to keep his skills up-to-date by pursuing industry certifications. A self-described “thumbs person,” he learns best by doing.

“I’ve always been a trade school type of person,” he said. “I learned a lot from my first supervisor, whom I worked under for nearly a decade. Over the years, I’ve continued to build on my skills, earning HVAC certificates as well as becoming a certified pool operator, stationary engineer and solar energy installer. While this keeps me busy, I enjoy the challenge of learning new things.”

Outside of work, Pruitt spends time with his wife of 15 years, Jennifer, and their two dogs. They enjoy taking their dogs for walks around different area parks.
