Meramec Student Artwork to be Displayed at Sheldon Art Galleries
Works of art created by 30 students from St. Louis Community College-Meramec will be displayed at the Sheldon Art Galleries in Grand Center this spring.
The exhibit, titled “St. Louis Community College-Meramec: Concept to Construct,” will feature artwork in the areas of interior design, graphic design, photography, printmaking, drawing and ceramics.
The exhibit will be on display from March 5-April 24 in the AT&T Gallery of Children’s Art at The Sheldon Art Galleries, 3648 Washington Blvd. A free public opening will be held Friday, March 5, from noon-9 p.m. Visitor capacity for the opening will be limited to 10 visitors per 15-minute time slot. Advanced registration is required. Registration ends at 10 a.m. on March 5.
The work on display was produced during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years by students in various courses offered by the department of design, visual and performing arts. The assignments by which the work originated varies—the only common denominator is that the artists were asked to challenge both themselves and the viewer.
David Hanlon, professor of photography and curator of the Meramec campus’ Contemporary Art Gallery, curated the exhibit for the gallery.
“Associate degrees in the arts fields help prepare students for continued academic study or for professional opportunities in commercial design disciplines,” Hanlon said. “It’s important for these students to have forums for collaboration, feedback and hands-on activities. We’re excited that our students have the opportunity to have their work in a forum such as the Sheldon.”
Paula Lincoln, Sheldon gallery manager said, "STLCC-Meramec is known for its great art department, and the work in this exhibit at The Sheldon demonstrates this with the strength of the student work."
Registration for an exclusive, 45-minute time slot for a party of up to 10 people is required during normal gallery hours. Sales end at opening time each day (noon on weekdays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays). Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, noon-5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free. All staff and visitors age 9 and older will be required to wear masks.
