Prepare for Geospatial Careers with GIS Training
St. Louis is emerging as a hub for geospatial technology, driven in part by the presence of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and its new headquarters. This growth is increasing demand for professionals with skills in mapping, data analysis and location-based technology across the region.
Through geospatial training at STLCC, you’ll gain hands-on experience using geographic information systems (GIS) to work with maps, spatial data and visual analysis tools. Courses focus on real-world applications, helping you understand how location data is used to solve problems and support decision-making.
These GIS courses can prepare you for roles such as GIS specialist or drone pilot, and provide a strong foundation for careers in fields like surveying, planning, environmental work and technology. Whether you’re starting a new path or building on existing skills, this training opens doors in the growing geospatial field.
Current Geospatial Technology Course Offerings
Launch a new career or build on existing skills with STLCC’s geospatial technology courses, which introduce practical tools used in mapping, data analysis and drone-based applications. These courses focus on hands-on learning and real-world uses of GIS and UAS.
GST 101. Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
This course introduces the fundamentals of GIS using ArcGIS software. You’ll learn how spatial data is collected, organized and analyzed, and how maps are used to understand patterns and relationships. Coursework builds skills in spatial thinking, basic data analysis and map creation to help solve problems and support decision-making across industries.
GST 102. Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems
Get started with drone technology and its applications. This course covers the different types of unmanned aircraft systems, basic flight operations and the use of onboard sensors. You’ll also learn about federal regulations, safety requirements and responsible drone use, providing a foundation for further study or certification.
GST 150. Drone Mission Planning and Photography
This course focuses on practical drone operations used in professional settings. You’ll learn how to plan and document drone missions, capture aerial photos, maintain flight records and conduct site surveys. Emphasis is placed on safe operation, accuracy and using drone data for mapping and visual analysis.
GST 201. Intermediate Geographic Information Systems
Build on introductory GIS skills with more advanced mapping and analysis techniques. Topics include cluster analysis, geocoding, network analysis and working with multiple data sources. This course helps you strengthen problem-solving skills and apply GIS tools to more complex projects.
Related Programs
Remote aircraft piloting and GIS are two distinct fields with different focuses, though they can sometimes overlap in applications like surveying or mapping. The remote aircraft pilot certificate prepares students for FAA Part 107 licensing and careers in UAS commercial operations.
