Small Acts of Kindness, Big Impact at STLCC

start the ripple and spread kindness at stlcc

When is the last time you gave someone a compliment? Or opened a door for someone?

These small acts of kindness can create big ripples across our College community. Every emotion is contagious, and kindness creates ripples that reach farther than we imagine. By practicing acts of kindness, we strengthen our culture of respect, collaboration and putting students first — values that define STLCC.

One of STLCC’s programs is taking these acts of kindness a step further through thoughtful, visible actions that inspire others to do the same.

Spreading Kindness at STLCC

Our physical therapist assistant program, housed at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park, wanted to help students become more mindful of how kindness affects others. The project started with a simple but powerful visual: a bowl and pebbles to illustrate the ripple effect of kindness.

Every time someone witnessed or received an act of kindness, they dropped a stone in the bowl — watching the ripples grow.

From that idea, the campaign expanded to include:

  • “Spread Kindness” bracelets to share when you perform or witness acts of kindness.
  • Kindness Bingo cards for staff and students to complete acts of kindness and win prizes.

How Faculty and Staff Can Participate

Drop a Pebble

Here’s how it works: When you perform or witness an act of kindness, drop a pebble in the kindness bowl. Each person who drops a pebble receives two “Spread Kindness” bracelets — one to keep and one to give to someone else who shows kindness.

By recognizing acts of kindness in real time, we make positivity visible across campus.

Ways To Spread Positivity as a Student

Need some inspiration on how to ignite compassion on your campus? Check out this list to get your wheels turning!

  • Share extra school supplies by offering a pen or pencil to someone who forgot theirs.
  • Donate clothes or non-perishable food items to the Student Advocacy & Resource Center.
  • Offer to help a classmate with a concept they don’t understand.
  • Clean up shared spaces on campus.
  • Offer to help someone find their way if they look lost.

The Ripple Starts With You

Kindness doesn’t require a big moment. It shows up in the small things — offering help, being patient, choosing empathy when it would be easier not to.

When we practice those small acts consistently, they add up. They shape the kind of campus we experience every day.

You never really know what someone else is carrying. A small act from you might be exactly what they needed.

Be the pebble. Start the ripple. Spread kindness.
