Monitor Heart Rhythms as a Telemetry Tech
The centralized telemetry monitor technician (CTMT) short-term training program at St. Louis Community College prepares you to monitor and interpret heart rhythms in a hospital setting. Offered in partnership with BJC HealthCare, this program provides full-time paid training while you learn, combining classroom instruction, hands-on training and clinical experience.
You’ll learn how to read heart rhythm patterns, understand the cardiovascular system and recognize changes that may need medical attention. By the end of the program, you’ll be ready to support hospital care teams and transition into full-time employment.
What is Telemetry Monitor Technician Training at St. Louis Community College?
Telemetry monitoring involves observing and interpreting a patient’s heart rhythm using electronic systems. In this role, centralized telemetry monitor technicians track data in real time and alert clinical staff to changes that may signal a problem.
Through the CTMT program, you’ll build the skills used in hospital settings, including how to:
- Understand the cardiovascular system and how the heart works.
- Read electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) monitors and interpret rhythm patterns.
- Recognize normal and abnormal rhythms, including sinus, atrial, junctional and ventricular rhythms.
- Identify heart blocks and other rhythm changes.
- Detect life-threatening rhythms and respond appropriately.
- Understand pacemaker function and identify malfunctions.
- Distinguish accurate readings from artifacts or interference.
Graduates earn imPULSE credentials through Apex Innovations. These show you can read
and interpret EKG/ECG heart rhythms and recognize signs of cardiac problems.
