Shape Metal into a Career with CNC Machinist Training
Start your career in advanced manufacturing with STLCC's precision machining technology certificate of specialization (CS). In just 17 credit hours, this program prepares you for high-demand jobs in the machine tool industry. You'll learn how to safely operate equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders and drill presses.
You'll build computer numerical control (CNC) skills including machine setup, operation and basic programming. The program follows National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) standards. You can earn up to seven level-one NIMS credentials that help you stand out to employers.
The program is open to students of all ages and backgrounds, including career-changers and first-time workers.
What is Precision Machining Technology at St. Louis Community College?
Precision machining technology prepares you for careers in advanced manufacturing. You'll learn how to create accurate, high-quality parts using manual and computer-controlled equipment. What Can You Do with a Precision Machining Technology Certificate?
With NIMS certification in hand, graduates work as CNC machinists, manual machinists or precision machinists in the machine tool trade. These jobs are found in aerospace, automotive, defense and medical device manufacturing across the St. Louis region and beyond.
On the job, you'll operate computer-controlled equipment, read blueprints, create custom parts and support production runs ranging from one-time projects to large-scale manufacturing. As you gain experience, you can move into specialized roles or leadership positions. Many machinists grow into CNC programmer, lead machinist, quality inspector or shop supervisor roles over time.
You can also combine your certificate with related STLCC programs such as computer aided design, engineering technology and biomedical electronics technology. Stacking credentials helps you take on a wider range of technical work, which can lead to higher pay and more job options.
