St. Louis Community College’s skilled trades industrial occupations technology program offers an associate in applied science (AAS) degree and certificate of specialization (CS) to help you build technical skills for a career in the trades. The program combines flexible coursework with industry-focused training to prepare you for opportunities in construction, manufacturing and industrial settings.
You can develop skills in areas such as carpentry, electrical systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC) and robotics, sheet metal manufacturing, assembly and production work.
Additional technical coursework may be required based on your chosen area of study. This flexible approach allows you to focus your training, build job-ready skills and prepare for a variety of skilled trades careers.

Skilled trades are careers that require technical knowledge, specialized training and problem-solving skills to build, install, maintain and repair systems, equipment and structures. These careers play an important role in keeping homes, businesses, factories and communities running. Skilled trades fields include construction, manufacturing, electrical work, welding, automotive service and other technical areas.
STLCC’s skilled trades industrial occupations technology program helps you prepare for in-demand trade careers by combining technical training with flexible degree options. The program allows you to build skills that align with your career goals while preparing for opportunities in construction, industrial operations and other skilled trades industries.
You can choose from two options:
Associate in applied science (AAS): Combines skilled trades training with general education courses. Students can choose a focus in carpenter training or electrical training while building the knowledge needed for career advancement.
Certificate of specialization (CS): Provides additional technical coursework to help students develop skills in a specific trade area. Course requirements vary based on the selected focus and are chosen with guidance from a program advisor.
What Can You do with a Skilled Trades Degree?
A skilled trades degree from STLCC can help you build on apprenticeship experience and advance your career in the trades. Graduates can pursue careers as electricians, carpenters, construction professionals and skilled trades specialists. With additional experience and training, you can move into roles such as crew leader, project coordinator, estimator, supervisor or other advanced positions in construction and industrial settings.
Through partnerships with the St. Louis Area and Vicinity Electricians Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) and the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council, approved apprenticeship training can count toward an AAS degree.
