Statement from the Artist

This exhibition explores my personal connectedness and examination of the natural world. In my studio practice, nature is not only an inspiration, but also a locus for reflection and a sanctuary that becomes a partner in the medium itself. I have recently been consumed by the desire to extract the essence of every leaf, every flower, every process, and have found that in this journey, nature never disappoints.

The sense of intimacy and protection provided by entrusting the body to a safe and nurturing environment generates a significant sense of belonging as well as accountability. This relationship creates the foundation for my creative processes as an eclectic exploration of the connectedness to a generous natural environment.

About the Artist

Nicole Petrescu-Tudor was born in Bucharest, Romania, and lived half of her life trying to escape - physically and psychologically - the influence of the oppressive communist regime. A diligent observer of the socio-political milieu, she developed an instrumentalist approach to art making, focusing mainly on inhabitable physical and cultural spaces through the lens of relational holism and environmental awareness. Her artwork/installations have been exhibited in local and regional galleries and are part of personal collections.

She received her formal training in painting and visual arts from Washington University in St. Louis, graduating in 2011 with a Master of Fine Arts. She currently teaches at STLCC and William Woods University, where she works to inspire new generations of artists to become responsible stewards for a sustainable world.
