STLCC Brings Enrollment Services to High School Seniors

For many high school seniors, the shift from graduation requirements to college planning is a whirlwind of excitement and uncertainty. To simplify this transition, St. Louis Community College offers a mobile enrollment initiative that brings the entire process directly to local high school campuses. By providing registration, advising and testing in a familiar environment, the program helps students start their academic path with clarity.

Bringing Enrollment Directly to Students

Through the mobile enrollment program, STLCC’s recruitment and outreach (R&O) team visits local high schools to assist first-time college students with key steps for their first semester. Students receive hands-on help registering for classes, signing up for Archer Orientation, learning about support services and exploring academic pathways.

The program also creates space for students to ask questions about majors, campus locations, financial aid, student resources and the overall college experience before stepping on campus.

“Mobile enrollment is an event that is open to high school seniors throughout the St. Louis area,” said Madelyn Hogrebe, student recruiter at STLCC’s Meramec campus. “We go directly to the high schools and register students for their first semester of college classes right on their high school campus.”

Helping Students Feel More Comfortable

The transition to college can feel intimidating. New students are often expected to complete placement testing, meet with advisors, register for courses and understand college expectations on their own.

By bringing these services into high schools, STLCC reduces uncertainty and provides a more supportive enrollment experience.

“Pattonville High School participates in the mobile enrollment program because it provides our graduating seniors with a solid start to their college experience at STLCC,” said Michelle Luraschi, college and career preparation coordinator/counselor at Pattonville High School. “The transition to college can be intimidating and confusing for new students, and the STLCC mobile enrollment program provides new students with valuable information and personal support to ensure they successfully navigate the transition from high school to STLCC.”

During enrollment visits, R&O team members work directly with students, providing materials, explaining next steps and guiding them through the process from start to finish.

Providing Testing and Support Services On-Site

One of the program's most valuable features is on-site ACCUPLACER placement testing. Rather than requiring students to travel to a college campus, STLCC brings testing services directly to participating high schools.

"STLCC provides ACCUPLACER placement testing services at Pattonville High School, which is convenient for our seniors who won't need to travel to a STLCC campus on their own time to test," Luraschi said. "Students are also usually more comfortable testing in a familiar setting like their high school, and this familiarity and comfort can help them perform better on the test."

The ability to complete testing, meet with the STLCC recruitment and outreach team, and register for classes, all within the high school setting, helps remove barriers that can delay enrollment.

"Seniors can meet with STLCC recruiters and register for their first semester of college classes all from their high school, which helps students feel more comfortable during this transition to college," Luraschi added.

Reducing Barriers and Building Confidence

According to Jennifer Mall, manager of recruitment and outreach at STLCC's Forest Park and Wildwood campuses, the mobile enrollment program is intentionally designed to reduce barriers and help students feel supported throughout the enrollment process.

"Mobile enrollment events have been designed with students in mind to help them navigate the first steps to become a first-time college student, ease anxieties, reduce barriers and ask questions from the comfort of their high school classroom," Mall said.

Rather than expecting students to navigate unfamiliar websites, paperwork and enrollment procedures on their own, the program creates opportunities for conversation, reassurance and personalized support.

This student-centered approach helps students see college as an attainable next step and provides them with the confidence to begin their academic journey successfully.

A Collaborative Effort Across STLCC

The success of mobile enrollment is the result of extensive collaboration across multiple STLCC departments, including recruitment and outreach, academic, career and transfer advising, information technology, enrollment services, student retention, and new student programs.

Planning for mobile enrollment begins months before students register for classes. During the fall semester, recruitment and outreach staff connect with students and high school counselors through college fairs, application workshops, mobile ACCUPLACER testing opportunities, and events such as STLCC's annual Counselors Breakfast.

Recruitment and outreach staff also collaborate with high school counselors to coordinate enrollment dates and review student transcripts.

In preparation for mobile enrollment visits, recruitment and outreach partners closely with academic, career and transfer advising to develop course schedules and ensure students are enrolled in appropriate classes. Advising staff remain available during enrollment events to assist the recruitment and outreach team and answer questions as students complete registration.

This collaborative model ensures students receive comprehensive support while streamlining the enrollment process.

Real Results and Lasting Impact

The mobile enrollment program currently partners with more than 60 high schools throughout St. Louis City and St. Louis County. The initiative plays a significant role in helping students successfully transition from high school to college.

"Last year we enrolled more than 500 students entering college for the first time right after high school," said Christopher Fletcher, districtwide director of recruitment and outreach. "This resulted in one of St. Louis Community College's most notable first-time college enrollment seasons in recent years."

The program's success demonstrates the impact of meeting students where they are and removing barriers that can prevent them from taking the next step toward higher education.

As Fletcher noted, "We're not waiting for students to come to us. We're bringing enrollment to the students."

A Strong Start Makes All the Difference

For many students, mobile enrollment provides much more than assistance registering for classes. It offers guidance, reassurance, and a sense of belonging before the first day of college.

By bringing testing, advising, and registration directly to local high schools, STLCC creates a more accessible and supportive pathway to higher education. Students leave Mobile Enrollment events knowing they have already taken meaningful steps toward their future and have a team of professionals ready to support them along the way.

The mobile enrollment program demonstrates what is possible when colleges and high schools work together to support student success. By reducing barriers, increasing access, and providing personalized support, STLCC is helping students start strong and build a foundation for long-term academic achievement.
