The St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees has appointed Elizabeth Gassel Perkins, EdD, as the next vice chancellor for academic affairs.
In her new role, Perkins will provide districtwide oversight of the College’s curriculum-related policies, articulation of courses and programs, assessment of student learning outcomes, institutional research and instructional resources. She will begin her new role on July 1.
Perkins is a familiar face at STLCC, having served as the president and chief academic officer for the STLCC-Florissant Valley campus for 10 years. She is replacing Andrew Langrehr, PhD, who is retiring.
“As a long-time leader in the district, Dr. Perkins has been integral in establishing programs such as our new Workforce Learning Connections and expanding the Early College Academy and advanced manufacturing offerings,” said Jeff L. Pittman, PhD, STLCC chancellor. “In addition to her contributions to the district, Dr. Perkins has continually shared her time and expertise with various community organizations. Her commitment to the College and community will help us continue to position STLCC as a leader in preparing our students for academic and career success.”
Perkins joined STLCC as provost of the Florissant Valley campus in August 2016. A native of North St. Louis County, Perkins earned her doctorate in leadership with an emphasis in higher education from Valdosta State University and a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in English and a master’s degree in English from the University of Montevallo in Alabama.
“I look forward to working with colleagues across the district to further our goals of supporting student success, employee engagement and academic excellence,” Perkins said. “I am deeply appreciative of the support, collaboration and inspiration I have received from my Florissant Valley colleagues, our students and community. I am thankful to Dr. Pittman, the search committee, and our entire STLCC community for trusting me to serve our students and our institution in this new capacity.”
Prior to joining STLCC, Perkins served in a variety of academic roles at Darton State College, now Albany State University, in Georgia. While at Darton State, she served as dean of the school of humanities and social sciences and was later selected as interim vice president of academic affairs. Perkins also served as Darton’s interim dean of math and science, dean of learning support, and dual enrollment program coordinator. She served as the statewide chair of the University System of Georgia Learning Support Advisory Committee and served on several state and college committees, including consolidation task forces for the new Albany State University. She began her career at Darton in 2006 as an English instructor and was promoted to tenured associate professor.
