There are steps you can take to ensure you feel the best you possibly can for tests. This article gives you practical advice that goes beyond doing homework and studying. It provides tips for preparing your mind and body for the exam as well as how to approach the test itself.
Prepare for Test
- Utilize homework and quiz questions to test yourself.
- Turn each heading and subheading of the text into an essay question.
- Practice with a friend.
- See our handout on Test Taking Strategies.
Get Plenty of Rest
- Plan ahead so you get the rest you need to perform your best.
- A lack of sleep just increases anxiety and affects your ability to focus.
Eat Something
- Try to eat something healthy, even if it is a granola or protein bar.
- If it is a morning test, try to fit in a healthy breakfast.
Arrive Early
- Ask last-minute questions and listen to test instructions.
- Get settled and ready to begin.
Be Positive
- Remind yourself that you prepared and know the material.
- Tell yourself positive messages, such as “I can do this!”
- Imagine a positive outcome.
Read Carefully
- Read the directions more than once. Be sure to understand the question. If not, please ask the instructor to clarify.
- Jot down notes in margins if needed or an outline if it is an essay question.
Take a Deep Breath and Begin
- Do not let the first question intimidate you. Just move on to the next question that you can answer.
- Return to questions that you skipped and do the best you can to answer them.
Watch the Clock
- Keep an eye on the clock and pace yourself.
- If you get stuck, circle that question and move on to the next one. Then return to the ones you circled and answer them as best you can.
