Supercharge Your Career as a Solar Panel Installer

As demand for clean energy continues to grow, the need for skilled solar panel installers is also increasing. St. Louis Community College’s free, short-term solar installer training program provides hands-on learning and technical instruction to help you install, maintain and troubleshoot solar energy systems for homes and businesses.

The program prepares you to earn industry-recognized credentials, including North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Associate and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification. These credentials help position you as a qualified solar energy professional and open doors to entry-level roles in solar installation, system maintenance and other renewable energy careers.

What is the Solar Installer Training Program at St. Louis Community College?

The solar installer training program at STLCC prepares you for entry-level work installing, maintaining and repairing solar energy systems. Training covers both residential and commercial solar projects and introduces the tools, safety practices and procedures used in the field.

Through hands-on instruction, you'll learn how to:

  • Safely install and handle solar panels.
  • Set up and integrate electrical systems for solar projects.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot solar energy systems.
  • Understand permits, codes and regulations.
  • Explain solar system operations and efficiency to customers.

This free training program is offered in partnership with the Saint Louis University Center for Environmental Education and Training and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is designed to help eligible individuals build foundational skills and begin a career in the growing solar energy industry.

What Can You Do as a Solar Installer?

Completing the solar installer program helps prepare you for entry-level work in the solar energy field. You’ll earn industry-recognized credentials that employers look for when hiring for solar installation and related roles.

Credentials earned in the program include:

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour Construction Safety
  • 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 7405 Fall Hazard Awareness
  • NABCEP Solar Photovoltaic Associate

With these credentials, you’ll be prepared to work on solar installation projects while following safety standards and industry best practices.

As demand for renewable energy continues to grow, solar installers are needed across residential, commercial and industrial projects. With experience, you may also move into advanced roles such as solar project manager, system designer or other leadership positions within the solar industry.

Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, you must attend an information session, complete an interview and meet these prerequisites:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a current, valid driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Eligible for employment in the United States
  • Pass a drug screening
  • Register at SLATE to complete the WorkKeys assessment and provide proof of passing scores on the Workplace Documents (5), Applied Mathematics (5) and Graphic Literacy (4) sections. WorkKeys is an assessment used by employers and job training programs to determine workplace readiness. 

Note: Priority is given to residents of the Promise Zone with a valid driver's license.
