Suicide Prevention and Awareness

STLCC is dedicated to raising awareness about suicide prevention and offering support to those impacted. Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. If you or someone you know is struggling, there are resources available to provide help.

How You Can Help Prevent Suicide

  • Recognize the signs: Engage in STLCC’s online suicide prevention training, Ask, Listen, Refer, to learn about the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicide. This essential training will empower you to take action when it matters most.
  • Raise awareness: Utilize resources from organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to spread awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention. Sharing information through social media, events or community outreach can have a significant impact on those who may be struggling.
  • Get involved: Join student organizations such as Active Minds to promote mental health awareness and advocate for policies that improve well-being. By participating in these groups, you can help create a supportive campus culture and foster an environment where mental health is prioritized and openly discussed.

Suicide Prevention Online Training Program

STLCC offers the Ask, Listen, Refer suicide prevention training program to provide faculty, staff and students with the necessary tools to help prevent suicide. This comprehensive training will teach you how to:

  • Identify people at risk: Learn to recognize individuals who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
  • Recognize warning signs: Understand the risk factors, protective factors and warning signs associated with suicide to better assess the situation.
  • Respond effectively: Gain skills to respond appropriately and seek help for those at risk, ensuring they receive the support they need.

This free, online suicide prevention training program takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It is educational in nature, rather than therapeutic, and must be completed in one sitting. Please note that logging in and out of the program may disrupt your progress and prevent you from obtaining your certificate of completion.
