Tax Information

Did you know you could earn more than just college credit? The money you spend on taking classes could potentially earn you tax credits as well.

As an STLCC student, you may be eligible to claim an education tax credit. IRS Form 1098-T shows information reported to the IRS regarding payment information from STLCC for education expenses during the tax year. For more information about claiming education tax credits, visit the IRS website.

The IRS requires the College to solicit Social Security numbers (SSN) or individual taxpayer numbers (ITIN) for accurate tax reporting on 1098-T forms.

You may download the W-9S form from the IRS website and then submit it by mail.

Complete Part I, then return page one of the form to:

What is an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement

The 1098-T is a form STLCC files with the IRS. This form includes information such as:

Payments Received for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses

The IRS requires the College to report payments received (Box 1) and other related information.

Box 1 will show the qualified tuition and related expenses paid during the calendar year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31). If you registered for an academic period starting between January and March of the following year and made payments by Dec. 31, those amounts will be included on your tax form, and Box 7 will also be checked.

Qualified education expenses generally include tuition and fees required for your enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution.

Scholarships or Grants

Box 5 reports the total scholarships and grants processed by the College during the calendar year. It does not include student loans or work-study.

The scholarships or grants you report during the calendar year may reduce the amount you can claim for tuition and fees, which could affect your education tax credits for that year.

Additional Information Reported

Box 8 shows whether you are considered to be carrying at least one-half the normal full-time workload for your course of study at STLCC for at least one academic period during the calendar year.
