Emergency Procedures

Knowing how to respond during an emergency is crucial to your personal safety and the wellbeing of those around you.

Be Prepared

Explore information for the specific hazards that are most likely to impact the STLCC campuses below. The definition of an emergency that requires evacuation is to include the following events and immediate response actions.

Emergency Evacuation Maps

In addition to hazard-specific responses, maintaining situational awareness can greatly increase your ability to react in a timely manner.

Basic Instructions

  1. Review the posted evacuation route designated for your work area. Review this with co-workers and, if faculty, your students on the first day of the academic calendar and on the day after mid-terms.
  2. Upon being notified of an emergency immediately take the action listed above.
  3. Except for an active shooter event, once evacuated your supervisor or designee, should account for all employees and report to the incident commander (Police officer) that employees are either unaccounted for, possibly trapped, or accounted for. Faculty members are responsible for accountability of their students. It is crucial that unless all employees and students are accounted for that a report be made that not everyone is accounted for and someone may be trapped inside the building!
  4. Do not re-enter the work area until instructed to do so.

Sheltering In Place

Individuals with special needs that prevent evacuating outdoors will be sheltered in place. These employees will move to a room as far from the emergency as feasible, place a wet shirt or rag under the door for fires, and mark their window. Faculty with students or supervisors with employees who cannot physically evacuate will notify the police/security officer that all of their employees/students did not evacuate and are sheltered in place.

Supervisor/Department Chair Instructions

Each supervisor or department chairperson is responsible for, or must designate an alternate when not present, to perform the following duties:

  1. Reviewing the evacuation procedure on the first day of the academic calendar and the day after mid-terms with employees.
  2. At the sound of the alarm or notification evacuate all students, employees, and visitors/contractors.
  3. Use the designated routes when evacuating individuals.
  4. Ensure individuals do not use elevators.
  5. Work as a team to clear areas.
  6. If safe to do so check the restrooms/break areas.
  7. Once outside instruct everyone to move away from the building.
  8. Account for: employees, students, and visitors. Report that all individuals are either: not accounted for or that they are accounted for. If all individuals are not accounted for give the list of individuals that are unaccounted for to the police/security force.
  9. If there is an individual who is not mobile enough to evacuate this will be immediately reported to the police/security force.
  10. Do not let anyone return to the building until the all clear has been issued.

Police/Security Responsibilities

The police/security force will work as a team to check the mustering point. They will, using a list of supervisors and department chairs, check that all persons are accounted for and report any persons not accounted to the emergency rescue personnel.
