Artist Bio:
Pat Owen is an artist from Columbia, MO, who received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Columbia College in 2015. Since graduating, Pat has completed two art residencies, The Emerging Artists Residency at Resident Arts in 2017, The Artist in Residence Program at Access Arts from 2018 through 2019, and is currently participating in the Artist in Residence program for the Sager-Braudis Gallery. Using color, texture, house paint, hardware materials, and sports imagery, Pat's most recent work is a response to the over consumption and addiction of sports culture.
Artist Statement:
The sedentary lifestyle, idle pursuits, and passive consumption are behavioral habits that pervade the current cultural landscape. This series of work responds to these habits through the focus of sports imagery and physical activity. Creativity, exploration, transformation, and learning are areas of personal development that are acquired through the participation of these activities.
To participate, is to perform; and for every performer there is a process; a journey to undertake. Challenge, adversity, stress, and failure become goals to overcome through the development of a competitive attitude to one's personal performance in their daily experience.
The rules, routines, games, and competition in sports is explored throughout the pieces in this body of work. Each piece performs as a metaphor for the trials and tribulations that athletes and performers face, leading to a stronger understanding of personal excellency and self mastery.
