User Information for Continuing Education Online Classes
What kind of Internet connection do I need?
Your internet connection will likely work fine for online classes if your YouTube and Netflix videos play well now.
What do I need to do to get ready for a class?
Continuing Education online classes are held via Zoom unless otherwise noted in the course description.
Zoom Access Information
You do not need to download the Zoom application to join a meeting. Participants can access Zoom directly through a supported web browser—such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge—without installing any software.
Downloading the Zoom app is recommended for the best experience, as the web version offers only limited features.
Note: Beginning January 2026, browsers more than three years old will experience limited functionality when using the Zoom Web App. Additionally, Zoom will end support for Windows 32 bit systems and all 32 bit browsers on December 15, 2025. Devices must run 64 bit operating systems to continue using the Zoom Web App.
Will my computer work?
Any relatively new computer will likely be fine for the online classes. It needs to have a current web browser installed. You’ll need speakers or headphones to hear the instructor.
Anything purchased new in the last 3-4 years is going to be more than the minimum.
Do I need a specific operating system?
The operating system on any relatively new computer will work for online classes. Zoom does requires a current web browser.
Minimum System Requirements for Zoom
- Operating Systems: Windows 10 or later, macOS 12 or later, Linux, or Android 8.0/iOS 11.0 and higher.
- Memory (RAM): 4GB or higher is recommended to ensure smooth operation, especially for screen sharing.
- Internet: Broadband wired or wireless (3G, 4G, or 5G).
Do I need to have a microphone?
A microphone would be needed to talk with instructors during the class meeting. Most laptops and tablets have one built-in. For a desktop computer a headset can be used. If you don't have a microphone, you can still participate in the class using a chat window that will let you type your responses and feedback to the instructor.
Do I need to have a webcam?
You don't need a webcam unless the class specifically says it is required to participate in the class. Some of the instructors like to see the students, and may want you to turn on your webcam if you have one.
Can I use my smartphone to attend online classes?
Very small screens (like a smartphone) will be hard to see what the instructor is showing or doing and likely won't work well for you. A smartphone can participate in the online classes, but it will be hard to see details on the screen. It’s best to use a desktop or laptop computer, or larger tablet.
