Paragraphs generally cover one idea and include supporting details that further explain or provide examples. The topic sentence tells your reader what your paragraph is about and may support a thesis statement as part of an essay or larger document. A paragraph ends with a concluding sentence that sums up what you’ve written and helps to transition to the next paragraph. 

This graphic organizer helps you think through each sentence in a paragraph. A paragraph may include more than three examples as well as further explanation, so use the white space as needed. Be sure to properly introduce any quotes or paraphrased material or at least take notes so you can write an in-text citation. For more help with that, please see our resource on Introducing Sources.
