STLCC-Florissant Valley Hosts “Pie a Professor with PTK” Event

Good-humored faculty, staff and students at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley got messy for a good cause before final exams in May during the “Pie a Professor with PTK” event.

Provost Elizabeth Perkins and others wiped pie from their eyes to raise funds that helped cover the cost of student membership into the campus’ Phi Theta Kappa honor society chapter.

Perkins has worked with Phi Theta Kappa students for fundraisers, community service projects, initiation ceremonies and a variety of other events.

PTK students promoting "Pie a Professor" event“I think PTK is an excellent organization, and I’m so proud of our Pi Kappa chapter students,” said Perkins, who took more than 20 pies to the face during the 2017 event.

“I think it’s important for faculty, staff and administrators to engage with our students and support them whenever they are working toward a goal. In this case, the goal is to assist their fellow future PTK members,” she added. “Because these students are being so selfless, the least I can do is let them pie me in the face.”

Event veteran Perkins donned goggles and brought extra paper towels in addition to wearing a shower cap and poncho.

“I’m only afraid of the ‘up the nose’ situation I encountered last year. Everything smelled like whipped cream for a day or so. And the first pie is always the worst,” she said.

Students paid $5 to pie each other or any willing Florissant Valley administrator, faculty or staff. For $10, they were able to pie a participating STLCC administrator. District officers who participated were Deborah Barron, associate vice chancellor for human resources; Anthony Cruz, vice chancellor for student affairs; and Andrew Langrehr, vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Faculty and staff paid $10 to pie Florissant Valley employees and $20 for district employees for $20. This year, the event raised more than $330, which covers the cost for five memberships/scholarships.
