Sprengeler Returns to Meramec for Lecture Series
Monday, October 16, 2023
The St. Louis Community College art programs have produced countless individuals who have gone on to distinguished careers. Richard Sprengeler was already an established photographer for many years when he took a Photoshop class at STLCC-Meramec, to enhance his skills. Years later, though, he returned to the Meramec campus to exhibit and discuss his 45 years in the photography industry.
The 10th annual Peterson Lecture Series was held on Oct. 4 this year, and featured Sprengeler’s “Landscapes/Cityscapes: A 45-year Retrospective.” In his exhibit and lecture, he explored his work in both the natural and urban environments around the American west and St. Louis, respectively. His exhibition includes images that best describe these pursuits, along with evidence of the inevitable intrusion of man into the natural environment.
The exhibit will remain open for viewing at the Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery through Oct. 27.
Sprengeler, a commercial photographer since 1984, transitioned into his current specialty of architectural photography in 2000. Architects, interior designers and construction firms call on Sprengeler to showcase their projects and document their work. The areas leading architectural photographers rely on him for his expertise in Photoshop retouching.
Sprengeler displayed his work in more than 30 exhibitions, including shows at the Sheldon Galleries, International Photography Hall of Fame (IPHF), Mitchell Art Museum, National Great Rivers Museum, St. Louis Lambert International Airport and Schmidt Art Center. In 2015 he became an assistant curator at the IPHF.
The Peterson Lecture Series is an annual event that showcases the work of local photographers of distinction and provides an opportunity for St. Louis Community College students, faculty and the community to learn more about photography from experienced professionals. The series is sponsored by Kristen Peterson, a retired photographer and long-time STLCC student at the Center for Visual Technology. The series was developed to encourage and inspire students to pursue and complete a degree at STLCC.
