Train for a Career as a General Maintenance Mechanic
St. Louis Community College's general maintenance mechanic training program prepares you for entry-level jobs keeping buildings, equipment and systems running safely. In three months, you'll learn the basics of building systems, repairs, troubleshooting and safety on the job.
Classes meet four days a week, so you can finish your training and start working in just one term. The program is open to students of all ages and backgrounds, including career-changers and first-time workers.
You'll learn the core tasks that maintenance workers do in factories, commercial buildings and industrial sites across the St. Louis region. The program gives you a strong start in the skilled trades. You'll also be ready to work toward building maintenance certification as you gain experience.
What is General Maintenance Mechanic Training at STLCC?
General maintenance mechanic training prepares you to maintain and repair the systems that keep buildings and equipment operating safely. You'll learn how building systems work while building the technical skills needed to troubleshoot problems, complete repairs and follow safety rules on the job.
The program covers the skills employers look for in entry-level maintenance technicians. You'll learn how to:
- Read blueprints and technical diagrams.
- Perform basic plumbing and pipefitting in residential, commercial and industrial settings.
- Work safely with electrical systems and circuits.
- Work with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- Prepare for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification.
- Complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 safety training.
The program gives you a strong start for careers in building maintenance, industrial maintenance and other skilled trades.
What Can You Do as a General Maintenance Mechanic?
As a general maintenance mechanic, you help keep buildings, equipment and systems running safely. Your work supports day-to-day operations by spotting problems, performing repairs and completing preventive maintenance before small issues become larger ones.
General maintenance mechanics work in manufacturing plants, construction sites, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and other places that need skilled maintenance workers. In these roles, you'll inspect equipment, troubleshoot mechanical issues, complete repairs and help maintain building systems and machinery.
The skills you build at STLCC prepare you for entry-level jobs across many industries.
They also give you a strong start for further training in related STLCC programs such as HVAC technician, engineering technology, welding technology and skilled trades industrial occupations technology.
