Build a People-First Career with a Human Services Degree

The human services associate in applied science (AAS) program provides a strong foundation in the social sciences for entry-level roles that support individuals, families and communities.

The challenges people face today are complex and often connected to access, systems and support. This program helps you understand those challenges and prepares you to work directly with people, connect them to resources and support well-being in community-based settings.

What is Human Services at St. Louis Community College?

Human services professionals work in many settings to help individuals and families access support, resources and opportunities that improve well-being. They may assist people with social needs, connect them to community programs, and help them navigate challenges related to employment, education and health.

STLCC’s human services AAS program draws from psychology, sociology, social welfare and community support practices to prepare you for work in these areas. The program helps you understand the social issues people face and how systems and services can support them.

You’ll learn to:

  • Support individuals and families in building self-sufficiency.
  • Manage client cases and coordinate referrals.
  • Help people find employment and prepare for interviews.
  • Assist clients with intake paperwork and access to services.

What Can You Do with a Human Services Associate Degree?

A human services associate degree prepares you for entry-level roles where you work directly with people and help them navigate services, resources and systems. These roles are often people-facing and focus on support, coordination and advocacy.

Graduates commonly start in positions such as:

  • Social services or case management assistant.
  • Outreach or community support worker.
  • Employment or workforce support specialist.
  • Peer support or client intervention specialist.

These jobs are found in social service agencies, nonprofit organizations, health care settings and community-based programs.

This degree also leaves room to grow. If you already have college experience or a bachelor’s degree in another field, the human services AAS can support advancement into mid-level roles such as lead or senior case manager, employment services manager or intake coordinator.
