Fuse Tech with Health Care as a Biomedical Electronics Technician

The biomedical electronics technology certificate of proficiency (CP) program trains students to become biomedical electronics technicians (BMET) by teaching electrical concepts, medical device knowledge and troubleshooting skills.

What is Biomedical Electronics Technology at St. Louis Community College

Biomedical electronics technology involves the application of electronics and engineering principles to develop, maintain and repair medical equipment used in health care settings. Biomedical electronics technicians play a crucial role in ensuring the proper functioning and safety of medical devices such as imaging systems, patient monitors, life support equipment and respirators.

Biomedical Electronics Service and Support Skills

Biomedical electronics service and support skills include:

  • Concepts associated with medical electronics and devices
  • Basic science behind instruments
  • Troubleshooting techniques

As a BMET, you’ll test, adjust, calibrate and repair biomedical or electro-medical equipment such as patient monitors, defibrillators, electric wheelchairs and medical imaging equipment.

What Can You do with a Biomedical Electronics Technology Certificate?

As a biomedical electronics technician you'll be responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing medical equipment, ensuring their accuracy and safety in health care facilities.

You might work in a hospital or with equipment manufacturers to maintain reliability and accuracy in medical monitoring and support. You may be on call to fix something in the hospital or respond to a malfunction in a patient's room. Your ability to troubleshoot systems, replace bad parts and work with nurses and doctors leads to better patient outcomes.

Once you’ve earned a certificate of proficiency in biomedical electronics technology, your credits can apply towards your electrical/electronic engineering technology AAS degree. Learn more about stackable credentials within this career pathway.
