What is the General Maintenance Mechanic Program at STLCC?

Maintenance mechanic training prepares you to keep buildings, equipment and systems operating safely and efficiently. This program introduces how building systems work and how maintenance professionals diagnose problems, make repairs and follow safety standards on the job.

Training focuses on the tasks used in day-to-day maintenance work and helps you build a broad skill set that supports entry-level roles and future growth into more advanced positions.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Read blueprints and diagrams to understand system layouts.
  • Perform plumbing and pipefitting work in residential, commercial and industrial settings.
  • Work safely with electrical systems and circuits.
  • Understand heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and prepare for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification.
  • Meet workplace safety requirements through Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 training completed online outside of class.

Requirements

The following requirements must be met for acceptance:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Complete WorkKeys assessments.  WorkKeys is an assessment used by employers and job training programs to determine workplace readiness. Benchmark scores on WorkKeys provide national certification.
