Machine the Things We Need with a Certificate in Precision Machining Technology

The precision machining technology certificate of specialization program trains students for entry-level positions in the machine tool trade. Students learn to safely operate milling machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and gain knowledge in computer numerical control (CNC) machine setup. The program aligns with metalworking skills for the National Incident Management System (NIMS) credentials for comprehensive skills testing.

What is Precision Machining Technology at St. Louis Community College

Precision machining technology involves the use of computer-controlled machines and specialized tools to create intricate and accurate parts from raw materials. This technology is used in various industries such as aerospace, automotive and manufacturing to produce precise components for complex machinery and equipment.

The Art of Bringing Stock Metal to Finished Product

Precision machining is the art of using mills, lathes and other machine tools to remove metal from a stock piece to match a provided drawing. While following good practices, the idea on the drawing is shaped by the machinists' work into a finished product.

At the end of the day, you have before you something which did not exist before. As you learn more machines and techniques, the world of what you can create expands, as does your career.

What Can You do with a Precision Machining Technology Certificate?

With a precision machining technology certificate, you can work as a precision machinist or computer numerical control operator. In this role, you will operate computer-controlled machines, read blueprints and use specialized tools to manufacture precise components for industries such as aerospace, automotive and manufacturing.

Jobs can include making one-off parts for a small company, working small batch production or working for a large company tending a few machines.

Machinists often rise through the ranks in the company as they learn more machines, programming and production management. Many will use this as a starting point in mechanical design, CAD, programming and engineering degrees through further school while working.

Testimonials

"It’s a lot of work and a lot of commitment, but the PMT certificate has entirely been worth it for me. It gave me the necessary credentials to get a machine shop job right out of college, which I am using to help pay for more education. It is a fantastic course to take, and a really fun one to take as well."
