Professional Truck Driving Program Checklist
The checklist below outlines what documents, exams and procedures are required for enrollment in the truck driving training program.
- Complete the online application.
- Attend a free information session hosted on the STLCC-Forest Park campus every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at 5460 Highland Park Drive.
- Obtain “Moving Vehicle Record” (MVR) from a DMV office. Cost is approximately $4. Must show a minimum of past two years driving history.
- Request a copy of “The Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual, version 4.0.” The manual is free at the DMV and required to study for the Commercial Learner’s Permit Test.
- Take Commercial Learner’s Permit Test at a MO Highway Patrol Testing Site. Take proof of passing exam to local DMV to pay for your Commercial Learner’s Permit. Cost is approximately $40 in Missouri and $50 in Illinois.
- If seeking external funding (i.e. WIOA or SkillUp), taking a WorkKeys Assessment and scoring at or above the minimum scores listed below will be required.If you are not seeking external funding, we still recommend taking a WorkKeys Assessment in order to earn a “National Career Readiness Certificate.” You can take the WorkKeys Assessment at a Missouri Job Center.

- Minimum WorkKeys Scores for Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers:
Bring ALL of the following items to your appointment in order to register for class.
- Commercial Learner’s Permit (that has been paid for at DMV)
- Missouri/Illinois driver license
- Original and recent MVR with a good driving record
- If required for funding, provide proof of WorkKeys scores minimums (listed above)
- Pay $6,000 for Professional Truck Driving Program tuition, plus fees for DOT drug test and DOT Physical
- After completing the above, take your DOT drug test and DOT physical at BarnesCare on Manchester Road. Both a negative drug test result and an approved physical must be received prior to the first day of class in order to start the training program.
