Dental Hygiene Program Requirements Checklist

Student must have successfully completed all requirements listed below prior to applying to the dental hygiene program.

  1. Apply to STLCC as a degree-seeking student
  2. Send transcripts
    • Official College Transcripts: An official transcript from each college attended must be sent directly from the college attended to STLCC-Registrar’s Office, 5600 Oakland Avenue, St. Louis, 63110 or email: csr@stlcc.edu. Hand carried or faxed transcripts will NOT be accepted.
    • High School Transcripts or GED: Required only for students with fewer than 15 hours of college level work or those who have satisfied the science requirements in high school. Current high school students must submit a final high school transcript before applying to the dental hygiene program.
  3. Minimum Cumulative GPA: Students must have and maintain a GPA of 2.5 in order to be placed and remain on the wait list. A 2.5 in high school or for 15 hours (minimum) of college work. Students with fewer than 15 hours of college credit must have both a 2.5 GPA in high school and 2.5 GPA in college.
    • GED Applicants: must have 15 hours of (100 level) college credits with a 2.5 GPA.
    • STLCC students with at least 15 STLCC level credits with a 2.5 GPA: will have met this requirement, regardless of the GPA at other colleges.
    • College transfer students with fewer than 15 STLCC credits: must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA in college level credits earned at all colleges attended.

      NOTE: Developmental courses (numbered below 100) will NOT be counted toward the 15 hours of college work and will NOT be included in the GPA for admission to the program.
  4. Science Prerequisite GPA: Complete ALL of the following to meet the science prerequisite
    A minimum of a 3.0 GPA is required for these four science courses with a minimum grade of “C” or better in each course within five years prior to admission. Science prerequisite courses may be retaken one time for a maximum total of two attempts.
    • BIO 203 General Microbiology
    • BIO 207 Anatomy and Physiology I
    • BIO 208 Anatomy and Physiology II
    • CHM 101 Fundamentals of Chemistry I
  5. Observation Hours: Students must complete a total of 20 hours observing dental hygienists in private practice in a minimum of two offices, three preferred. This is to be documented on practice letterhead (date, number of hours spent observing and signature of dentist or dental hygienist). Professional attire is required with no visible tattoos or body piercings; no jeans; only closed-toe shoes.
  6. When the above criteria have been met, students must meet with an academic advisor and submit a separate dental hygiene program application. Once the academic advisor completes their part and signs the application, the application will be forwarded to the dental hygiene program director.
