This program prepares students for entry-level positions as radiographers (X-ray technologists). Students learn to use complex X-ray and image processing equipment designed to record images that aid radiologists in diagnosing various health problems. Students must attend full-time and satisfy both the didactic and clinical components to successfully complete the program.
The recommended academic plan blends general education requirements with options for areas of concentration to ensure students get the most out of their certificate or degree.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the overall employment of radiologic and MRI technologists is projected to grow 9% percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. As the population grows older, there will be an increase in medical conditions that require imaging as a tool for making diagnoses. Employment is available in hospital radiology departments, orthopedic clinics, urgent care centers, imaging centers, outpatient surgery centers and physicians offices.

Program Admission Requirements
- All applicants must be admitted to St. Louis Community College.
- All applicants must complete the following requirements before completing a Radiologic Technology program application.
- BIO:111 Introduction to Biology I or two semesters of high school biology with labs
- MTH:050 Mathematical Literacy
- Math and science cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Math and science courses must be completed within five calendar years of entering the program.
- Must provide documentation of a minimum of 8 hours of job shadowing in the general radiology (x-ray) department of a hospital. Job shadowing must be completed prior to application to the program. This requirement is temporarily waived during the COVID-19 pandemic. A program application will be accepted at this time without completing job shadowing.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- All applicants must complete a criminal background check and drug screen through a college-approved background screening company prior to the beginning of the fall semester of admission. The student will be responsible for the cost of the background check and drug screen. Students not passing the criminal background check and/or drug screen may be prohibited from participating in clinical education. This will prevent the student from being able to complete all program requirements for graduation.
Students are required to complete a health history, immunization record, physical exam, essential functions acknowledgment form, criminal background check, drug screen and American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers CPR certification prior to the first day of class. Completing these requirements should begin immediately following the mandatory program orientation meeting in May.
Applications for the program are accepted on a continuing basis from eligible applicants. Students will meet with an academic advisor on the Forest Park campus who will complete the program application after reviewing the student' s transcripts and completed job shadowing form.
Students being offered fall program admission will be notified by mail. The admission letter will be mailed the second Friday in March.
Applicants entering in the fall semester must attend a mandatory program orientation meeting that will be held in May. The specific date, time and location of the orientation will be included in the admissions letter. Following the orientation, students immediately begin the background check, drug screen, and immunization tracking process.
Eligible applicants not admitted due to space availability will remain on the alternate list.

No, this is a full-time, 23-month day program.
The Radiologic Technology program is demanding and requires a significant time commitment. You will need to set aside 2-3 hours of study time (reading, homework, review) for each hour you are in class. It is recommended you work no more than 20 hours per week. Working more than 20 hours per week is discouraged, since this heavy workload may be detrimental to your academic and clinical success in the program, and your job must not conflict with classroom or clinical hours.
All program applicants must provide documentation of a minimum of eight hours of job shadowing in a hospital general radiology department. The completed job shadowing documentation form must be submitted at the time of program application.
The student arranges this on their own by contacting the human resources department of the hospital of their choice.
Shadowing at clinics, physician offices, outpatient centers, surgery centers, etc. will not be accepted because the purpose of this experience is to expose students to the environment they will encounter throughout the program.
Shadowing may be done at two different facilities, four hours at each facility.
A maximum of four hours may be completed at a children’s hospital.
Although a criminal record does not prevent you from being accepted into the program, it may prohibit you from participating in clinical education courses, which would prevent you from completing all program requirements for graduation. The clinical site has the right to deny participation to a student, which may not be appealed.
A criminal record may also prevent you from being eligible to take the certifying examination following graduation from the program. This will adversely impact your ability to obtain work in this field. Please contact The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to discuss their pre approval process.
Currently, yes. In order to facilitate the entry of students in the available spaces, a waiting list is used. A student is placed on the waiting list once program application prerequisites have been met and a program application has been submitted. Placement on the waiting list is based solely on the date of application. The time one is on the waiting list varies. Students will be sent a letter each fall while on the list asking for their intentions to pursue admission to the program. Failure to respond to this letter by the deadline given will result in removal from the list. Letters will be sent in March to those being offered admission to the program in the fall semester, as well as to a number of admission alternates. All those receiving letters must attend a mandatory program orientation in May. Please contact the program director for more details.
The number of students accepted each year is typically between 34 and 40, and varies based on the job market and clinical capacity.
Contact information must be current. Notify the program director immediately and update your information in Banner. Not being able to contact you will result in removal from the waiting list and jeopardize admission to the program.
Completion of all program required general education courses between the time of program application and beginning the program is strongly advised. This will significantly reduce your course load once the area of concentration (XRT) courses begin.
Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO:207) is a prerequisite to XRT:101 and must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” prior to the start of this course.
Medical Terminology (IS:205 or HIT:101) is highly recommended, but not required.

The Radiologic Technology program currently utilizes 15 hospitals located throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. Students are assigned to hospitals based on the educational needs and balance of examinations in the St. Louis area. Typically, students rotate through a minimum of three JRCERT approved clinical sites in their training. There are two major rotations and one minor rotation. The minor rotation is at a pediatric facility.
