Between late-night study sessions and binging on pizza and junk food, college life isn’t always known for producing healthy habits in students. But with the right mindset, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and overall well-being is not only attainable but can be one of the most fun and rewarding aspects of your college experience.
With an array of options tailored specifically to promote healthy options for students, the opportunities to stay active are plentiful and varied at St. Louis Community College. From invigorating yoga classes conveniently held on campus to the flexibility of workouts you can do right in your home, STLCC prioritizes your health. The College offers a wide range of affordable fitness programs with tips designed for student health, ensuring you feel vibrant and healthy in both body and mind. Explore the extensive health and wellness resources available and discover how embracing regular exercise can significantly enhance your college life.
Getting in a Workout While on Campus
STLCC is a great place for students eager to keep up their fitness levels right on campus. Our modern fitness centers are designed to make physical activity accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Whether your passion lies in weightlifting or cardio workouts, STLCC has offerings to suit your preferences. Located on our Florissant Valley, Forest Park and Meramec campuses, our fitness centers are free for all students to use (after taking a quick safety and orientation course).
If working out in the fitness center isn’t for you, there are many other options to burn calories while remaining on campus. Our Florissant Valley and Meramec campuses each have quarter-mile outdoor tracks that students can use for running, walking or jogging. Our Wildwood campus recently installed an outdoor basketball hoop for those looking to set up a game or practice their jump shot. And all four main campuses are perfect for walking workouts—where participants can enjoy the campus atmosphere, along with plenty of greenery and foliage. For those looking for a few moments of serenity between classes, our Meramec campus has multiple gardens with walking paths that serve as a tranquil backdrop for students seeking peace and quiet.
Earn Credits While Getting Healthy
If working out on your own isn’t a good fit for you, consider taking a class for credit. With experienced instructors, you can learn a new skill or brush up on an old one. Our course catalog is filled with options for health and wellness classes. With everything from basic fitness to advanced weightlifting, there is no shortage of options for students looking to gain knowledge as well as college credits.
Some options include:
- Yoga
- Archery
- Backpacking
- Swimming
- Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Stress management
- And more!
Continuing Education Options
For community members who aren’t interested in earning college credits but still wish to learn how to improve their fitness and wellness levels, there are dozens of classes offered through our continuing education program.
With classes on everything from aging to Zumba, there’s something for every learner. Continuing education students can choose from a wide variety of options, including:
- Pickleball
- Tennis
- Golf
- Self defense
- Hiking
- Pilates
- And more!
Walking Trails Nearby
All of our campuses have walking trails on the grounds or nearby. Just north of the Florissant Valley campus is Little Creek Nature Area. With many trails to hike Monday-Friday, you can find a nature oasis tucked amid the hustle and bustle of North St. Louis County. Our Forest Park campus is located next to—you guessed it—Forest Park. Forest Park is one of the most iconic city parks in the world, and it’s just steps from campus. Walk the trails or visit the zoo or museums nearby. Just a few minutes south of our Meramec campus is the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center. There, nature lovers can walk on one of three paved paths throughout the year. Our Wildwood campus is tucked into nature itself, so there are numerous trails to traverse nearby. Locals love the Turkey Ridge Trail just south of campus for a “sneaky hard” two-mile hike. Don’t worry, there are benches along the way if you need a break.
These are just the tip of the iceberg, as St. Louis has hundreds of hiking and trail options for every level—visit one of these, or find your own nearby!
Integrating Exercise into Your Daily Life
Incorporating exercise into your busy academic routine doesn’t have to feel like a burdensome task. At STLCC, we firmly believe that physical activity for students should be both enjoyable and effective. When time is tight, consider trying out home workouts—these quick and efficient exercises are designed to fit seamlessly into your schedule. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions or brief yet invigorating yoga sessions can be ideal for students with packed agendas.
If you’d rather not workout on campus or at home, there are many gyms and workout facilities near our campuses—be sure to inquire about student discounts. All four of our main campuses are within a few miles (or less) of a YMCA.
Setting realistic fitness goals and varying your exercise regimen can lead to a well-rounded routine. Remember, physical activity is not solely about fitness; it encompasses feeling energized and healthy from the inside out. You’ll soon discover how integrating workout sessions into your daily life can significantly uplift your mood and enhance your academic performance!
Essential Nutrition and Mental Health
While exercise is a crucial component of student life, nutrition plays an equally vital role in maintaining fitness and well-being. STLCC is dedicated to offering healthy eating options, featuring fresh and nutritious meals that cater to a variety of dietary needs. Meal prepping is an excellent strategy for staying aligned with your nutritional goals while also saving time and money during your hectic week.
Additionally, never underestimate the importance of staying hydrated and getting adequate sleep. Carrying a reusable water bottle and prioritizing rest can significantly boost your energy levels. Explore the health and wellness classes available on campus for more comprehensive tips and strategies to support your fitness endeavors.
Lastly, don’t forget about your mental health. STLCC’s counseling department supports the psychological well-being of our student community—with services at no cost to students currently enrolled with the College. There, you’ll receive individualized support and a safe place to navigate your challenges and feelings.
Transforming Your Commute into Exercise
Why not turn your daily commute into an opportunity to engage in physical activity? Opting for active transportation methods, such as walking or cycling to your campus, presents a fantastic chance to stay fit. Embrace the beauty of the outdoors and take the opportunity to connect with fellow students as you traverse the campus landscape.
Safety should always be a priority, so remember to follow straightforward guidelines: stick to designated paths and wear bright, visible clothing. It’s all about ensuring that exercise for students remains both safe and enjoyable. By choosing active commuting, you’ll not only feel invigorated but also prepared to tackle the challenges of the day ahead, while also saving a few dollars on gasoline.
Creating a Supportive Fitness Network
Staying fit on campus becomes even more enjoyable when you have friends by your side. Connect with fellow students and establish workout partnerships to inspire one another along the way. Participating in group fitness challenges can transform working out into a social endeavor that enhances camaraderie and fun.
Utilize social media platforms to locate and join fitness groups at STLCC. You can discover like-minded individuals who share your fitness aspirations and exchange valuable health tips tailored for students. Together, you can foster a supportive atmosphere that makes the endeavor of staying fit both enjoyable and rewarding. With a robust support system, you’ll find yourself thriving while you get healthier.
