Gear Up for a Career as a Hazardous Materials Technician
St. Louis Community College offers a grant-funded five-week program for individuals interested in a career in hazardous materials management that is free for those who qualify. Participants learn how to assess and remediate contaminated properties in the St. Louis metropolitan area and other national remediation sites.
What is the Hazardous Materials Technician Program at St. Louis Community College?
This specialized program prepares you to safely work with and transport hazardous
materials, allowing you to pursue a career in the environmental remediation industry.
The 174-hour curriculum offers both coursework and practical instruction, with all
required books and materials provided free of charge. Participants will receive certifications
in hazardous waste operations and emergency response, CDL-B truck driver certification
and safe transportation of hazardous materials.
What Can You Do as a Hazardous Materials Technician?
The hazardous materials technician program prepares you for roles within sectors such as:

You'll gain skills to address incidents such as chemical spills, radioactive material exposure and biological agent containment. This essential training enables you to clean up contaminated areas safely and manage hazardous waste in compliance with environmental laws, ensuring organizations adhere to regulations.

- Duration: Five-week program, five days per week from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Requirements
The following requirements must be met for acceptance:
- 18 years of age or older
- U.S. Citizen
- Current, valid driver’s license with a good driving record and six months of driving experience
- Class B learner's permit
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Eligible for employment in the United States
- Pass Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and physical tests
- Pass Transportation Security Administration background check for HAZMAT endorsement
- Ideal candidates will have knowledge of, or experience in, construction to include rehabilitation work and do-it-yourself projects
- If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate a level of English language proficiency through STLCC's ESL Assessment
Licenses and Certifications
By completing this program, you'll obtain the following licenses and certifications:
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-Hour: Construction & Safety
- 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)
- OSHA 7300: Permit-Required Confined Space
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- HAZMAT endorsement for the CDL

Location: 5460 Highland Park building, STLCC-Forest Park. Park in Lot E, and then walk across the street to the Highland Park building. Sessions are held in the classroom near the front door.
