Looking for a career that's hands-on, in demand and helps keep people and the environment safe? STLCC's hazardous materials technician training program is your chance to get real skills in just five weeks and is completely free for qualifying students.
You'll earn your commercial driver's license (CDL) with HAZMAT endorsement through the program, giving you credentials and skills that companies in manufacturing, shipping and emergency response need right now. Upon completion, you'll be ready to start working in a field that makes a real difference.
What is the Hazardous Materials Technician Program at St. Louis Community College?
The HAZMAT technician program teaches you how to safely handle and clean up dangerous materials, respond to spills and emergencies, and follow safety regulations. You’ll learn how to:
- Handle hazardous materials safely: Work with chemicals, biological hazards and other dangerous substances to keep yourself and others safe.
- Respond to emergencies: Learn how to act quickly and safely during spills, accidents or other hazardous situations.
- Follow safety rules: Understand and apply the regulations required on the job to ensure compliance and safety.
- Drive commercial trucks: Earn a Class B CDL with a HAZMAT endorsement to transport hazardous materials safely.

Hazardous Materials Technician Short-Term Career Training
- Location: Forest Park
- Duration: Five-week program, five days per week from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Class date: Oct. 16 - Nov. 21
- Student cost: Free. All books and materials provided for those who qualify for the grant.

Requirements
The following requirements must be met for acceptance:
- 18 years of age or older
- U.S. Citizen
- Current, valid driver’s license with a good driving record and six months of driving experience
- Class B learner's permit
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Eligible for employment in the United States
- Pass Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and physical tests
- Pass Transportation Security Administration background check for HAZMAT endorsement
- Ideal candidates will have knowledge of, or experience in, construction to include rehabilitation work and do-it-yourself projects
- If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate a level of English language proficiency through STLCC's ESL Assessment
Licenses and Certifications
By completing this program, you'll obtain the following licenses and certifications:
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-Hour: Construction & Safety
- 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)
- OSHA 7300: Permit-Required Confined Space
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- HAZMAT endorsement for the CDL
