Accounting Program Overview
The accounting program provides many courses and several certificates on each of its three campuses for students who want to enter the field of accounting. Accounting classes are characterized by small size, instructors who are willing to provide assistance and a drop in Accounting Lab at the Florissant Valley, Forest Park and Meramec campuses for additional tutorial assistance. The courses in each of the certificate programs provide a stepping stone toward completion of the next higher degree or certificate; so students can start by completing the certificate that is easiest to obtain, and then continue to earn another certificate or degree.
Accountants, accounting assistants, and bookkeepers are important to any business because of their abilities to analyze, record, organize, summarize and interpret business information. They help businesses run efficiently by keeping records accurately and ensuring that taxes and other payments are made on time. Accountants, auditors, accounting assistants and bookkeepers work for corporations, partnerships, sole proprietorships, not- for-profits and governments across the globe. Computers greatly have changed the way these professionals and paraprofessionals do their work. Recent changes in federal law, like the Sarbanes Oxley Act, have created new opportunities in the field of accounting.
More than two million persons in the United States work as accounting assistants or bookkeepers. The most recent information from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs for accountants and auditors will grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2014 (an increase of 14-27%), while jobs for accounting assistants and bookkeepers will grow more slowly than the average for all occupations through 2014 (an increase of 0-8%).
Persons interested in accounting should possess:
- Good computer skills
- Proficiency in commercial software
- English is part of the General Education requirement for all associate degree programs. Some certificate programs also require specific English courses and/or offer English courses as electives. However, English does not have its own separate degree or certificate.

Faculty and Staff
St. Louis Community College expands minds and changes lives every day by offering high-quality educational experiences leading to degrees, certificates, employment, university transfer, and life-long learning.
Campus Life
St. Louis Community College offers students several opportunities to develop and expand their interests outside of the classroom. We provide opportunities to participate in service learning, leadership development, civic engagement activities, community service projects, clubs/organizations and other special presentations.
Affordable Education
As college costs continue to rise, St. Louis Community College continues to keep a high-quality college education within reach. It costs nearly 70 percent less per year to attend STLCC than other public universities in Missouri, and that figure is based on tuition alone. When you factor in additional four-year college expenses like room and board, the value of an education from STLCC becomes even clearer.
