STLCC-Meramec to Host Airstream Nomadic Gallery

Artstream Nomadic GalleryThe Artstream Nomadic Gallery, featuring artwork from ceramics artists around the country, will be at the Meramec campus of St. Louis Community College March 29 and 30.

The restored 1967 Airstream trailer will be parked on the Student Center Quad, and will offer handmade ceramics at retail prices, along with multiple workshops throughout the day. The event is open to the public.

“We will have workshops about ceramics, painting, drawing and more,” said Jim Ibur, curator for the Meramec Contemporary Art Gallery and organizer of the rare event. “It will pass through our campus on its way back from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference in Pennsylvania. It’s a great opportunity to buy quality artwork from a unique dealer.”

The event will also include demos and lectures by noted artists Simon Levin, John Cohorst and Justin Donofrio.

The Artstream Gallery, on the road since 2002, is based in Carbondale, Colo., but has traveled to more than 150 locations from Los Angeles to New York, Houston to Minneapolis.

“What makes it such a great event is that they bring custom work by artists around the nation and showcase talent,” Ibur said. “It’s the best quality and is sold at market prices.”

It wasn’t easy getting the traveling exhibition here. It took a lot of phone calls and emails to secure STLCC as a destination on the national tour. But for Ibur and others who have experienced it before, it is well worth the effort.

“I’m excited to see people come out because it really is something cool to see,” Ibur said. “And the best part is that they park right on the Quad, front and center, so you can’t miss it. It’s a really great way to get to know the Ceramics Club here as well as view or purchase the art traveling around the country.”
