St. Louis Community College's diesel technology programs prepare you for that work. You'll learn diesel engine operation, fuel systems, electrical systems and computer diagnostics through classroom instruction and hands-on lab practice. You'll train with the same tools used by working technicians, so you're ready for the shop floor on day one.
Graduates step into entry-level roles at dealerships, maintenance facilities and other shops that keep large vehicles running. Choose from three credentials to match your goals and schedule: an associate in applied science (AAS), a certificate of proficiency (CP) or a certificate of specialization (CS).
What is Diesel Technology at St. Louis Community College?
Diesel technology is the field of diagnosing, repairing and maintaining the engines and systems that power heavy vehicles and equipment, including trucks, buses and construction machinery. Diesel technicians use mechanical skills, technology and problem-solving to keep these essential machines running safely and efficiently.
The programs combine classroom learning with hands-on experience in diesel engine operation, maintenance procedures and modern diagnostic technology. You'll build skills in:
- Diesel engine systems and repair.
- Fuel and air systems.
- Electrical and electronic systems.
- Computer diagnostics and troubleshooting.
- Preventive maintenance and heavy-duty vehicle service.
STLCC offers three program options:
Associate in applied science (AAS): Combines diesel technology training with general education courses, giving you a full college degree and the strongest foundation for career growth.
Certificate of proficiency (CP): Focused diesel technology training that prepares you for entry-level jobs in the diesel service industry.
Certificate of specialization (CS): Builds the core skills needed for common diesel service and maintenance tasks.
What Can You Do with a Diesel Technology Degree?

Diesel technicians are in steady demand across the country as trucks, buses and heavy machinery get more complex and require more skilled hands to service.
Graduates work as diesel technicians, mechanics and service specialists across a wide range of industries, including transportation, construction, agriculture, mining and fleet maintenance. You could find yourself at a dealership, a fleet operation, a construction company or an independent repair shop, depending on the path you choose. With experience, you can move into specialized repair areas, master technician roles or shop leadership positions.
You can also combine your diesel technology degree with related STLCC certificates to expand your skills and career options. Stacking credentials can prepare you for a wider range of roles in the automotive and transportation industries.
