April 15, 2023 PepsiCo. Foundation Uplift Scholars Celebration

In addition to financial assistance, the program provides students with an array of resources to aid them in a successful completion of their education. The program is designed with a holistic approach to promote access to education advancement by addressing the obstacles – retention, completion, and workforce readiness – that disproportionately impact Black and Hispanic students’ educational and professional journeys. The Uplift program at St. Louis Community College aims to guide students to jobs in high-growth industries.

Through PepsiCo Foundation’s support, the PepsiCo Uplift Scholarship will award 160 STLCC students with financial support for costs related to tuition, course materials and supplies, emergency assistance and wrap-around services.

If you are interested in the Uplift scholarship, you can apply directly at stlcc.academicworks.com.

Program of Study: Business Administration

My story may sound like many others, tired of living paycheck to paycheck barely making ends meet, struggling to get ahead, and working in conditions that were not pleasant. But I was determined not to give up and I registered for school after being turned down for a job at McDonald's. Because I had skills in nursing they did not think I was serious and wanted to work, I did not know how I was going to pay for school. I had maxed out my financial aid so I made a payment plan I worked extra hours to pay for my classes and I continued to struggle almost losing my apartment and my mind. But I had a special friend Professor Debra Harper- LaBlanc, she inspired me not to give up but to write and seek out scholarships, so I tried it and PepsiCo heard my cry. I am so blessed and I appreciate everything they have done for me. Pepsico has changed my life. I am now a Junior and I could possibly graduate in the spring of 2023. Thank you, Pepsico for believing in me and offering hope to many others.

Receiving my degree in Business Administration will help me improve myself, improve my life standing and give my children better opportunities for the studies. The PepsiCo Uplift Scholarship, throughout the events, the follow up of Vanyah and the scholarship, makes me feel like I'm not alone on this road; it makes me feel like I'm important, my success matters and there are people who are looking after me. That makes me work harder and give the best so that these people could say: "we were right to support her".

Program of Study: Business Administration

It is important to me because, I am a single mother of six. I put my goals on hold to make sure my children stayed focus on their education. I did not receive my high school diploma until 2017. My youngest child graduated in 2020, the same year I decided that it was time to pursue my goals. Having someone believe in you is really all someone needs to help give them that push. I was scared my first semester but now two years later I am due to graduate in the spring with my first degree. I am so proud and grateful; I'm not stopping until I receive my B. A. in Business and pass the CPA exam. Thank You for your support and believing in me.

Jasmine B.

Program of Study: Information Technology

My degree is important to me because I don't want to struggle my whole life. I'm tired of living paycheck to paycheck; barely making ends meet, robbing Peter to pay Paul. I sick of debt and asking my parents or aunts and cousins for a loan for rent, to pay for mechanical services to my car, or help with my car note if my check is short. I eat when I'm at work, most of the time I go straight from work to home or school to home. My schedule is so fixed right now that I don't really have an off day because I go to school on my off days and mostly have to do homework at night after work. I've been having a lot of car problems starting just before the flood in July 2022 that totaled my original car; scrambling around to get another with less than $500 in my pocket, then when I finally do get one the "KIA Boys" attack less than two weeks of my having the car and my car is in the shop for almost three months mostly waiting on parts because now they're had to find. I need a change, I want to do more and have something more than just working my life away and being mad that rent has gone up another $25 a month and being told "It's only $25, you can handle it. It's nothing." as if money grew on trees and I'd just have to wait until spring. The PepsiCo Uplift Scholarship helped because it allows me not to pick and choose what necessary items or bill will have to be sacrificed to benefit the other as school is considered. If I'm not worrying about where the money for school is coming from, I can turn my attention to other areas. When I do have a actual career I'll have more than enough money that I'll even enroll things like 'autopay' on my bills and not wounder if it will be covered because that particular day isn't my payday. Even though it's hard to juggle everything I keep doing it because as that old saying goes, "If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll keep getting what you've always gotten." and I don't want that. I'm going to have to change to get a better life, so I'm in school to learn how and I'm learning interesting things along the way. I like learning new things and how they work. I like it when things make sense; when you stop learning then you stop growing.

Program of Study: Advanced Manufacturing (HVAC, Welding)

My certifications are important to me because they have truly changed my life. With these certifications under my belt I have been able to launch a career that has granted me financial literacy and stability. The PepsiCo Uplift Foundation has contributed to my education tremendously! If it wasn’t for them granting me the opportunity of free education I wouldn’t be in the position Im in today. This opportunity has allowed me to grow into an amazing business professional. Most of all this gave me confidence, the confidence I had lost at a point in time. Every time I tell my story my heart fills with joy because I am blessed. This opportunity, the people, the education has been a blessing that I will never forget!

Daniel W.

Program of Study: Advanced Manufacturing

Receiving the HVAC operator 1 certification has allowed me to enter into a career with a good hvac company in the St. Louis area. None of this would have been possible without the PepsiCo Uplift Scholarship. Through this scholarship I was able to attend a class taught by an incredible instructor named John Hope, who really gave me a great introductory into the hvac field and sparked my interest in it even more so. Within those 2 weeks of class i earned my epa universal & osha 10. During my process of applying for the company I’m with now (Classic Air Care) , I was able to stand out with my epa certification as it showed my dedication and seriousness about pursuing a career in HVAC. I now am I driver for them until my training classes begin , but i am still seeing first hand what it is like to be in this field , whether it’s making trash runs and meeting with installers and service techs or making deliveries where I am meeting salesmen/warehouse crew at local part stores. Needless to say I am getting the full experience!

Torrion W.
