Class Scheduling

St. Louis Community College Class Scheduling Patterns
The primary goal of the academic scheduling process is to increase the probability that a student will have the ability to register for a complete schedule, conducive to on-time graduation. The standards set forth below also help ensure that there are not staff, space or course conflicts.

St. Louis Community College defines “primetime” as classes starting between 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Primetime is designated for Missouri Transfer (MOTR) courses, developmental courses, and other transferrable courses that comprise the Associate in Arts degree requirements. Please note that although the primetime meeting slots are intended for those course types, these courses may exist outside of primetime to meet student scheduling needs.

When scheduling 12-week courses, academic departments will prioritize CORE 42 Missouri Transfer courses and developmental education. First 8-week and second 8-week courses are limited to CORE 42 Missouri Transfer courses and sequential course offerings (i.e. Anatomy & Physiology I – 1st 8 week; Anatomy & Physiology II – 2nd 8 week). Additionally, 1st 8-week classes and 2nd 8-week classes must match in day and time to maximize the use of our college facilities and allow students to build a sensible schedule.

Academic departments must strictly adhere to the approved standard set of meeting time patterns as well as the seat time specifications. Since the standard meeting lengths are in 50- and 75- minute time blocks, non standard sections should be offered at the same start time as a typical 3 credit hour lecture course.

Deviations from Approved Patterns
Courses that receive prior approval may deviate from the scheduled time patterns reflected. Approval will be granted on a case-by-case basis and will be approved only if a compelling argument can be made as to why the approved patterns will not meet the needs of the department.

A request for approval shall be sent as an agenda item to the District Deans/Presidents meeting where a decision will be rendered.
