GPA and Grades Information

Pursuant to Board Policy G.09.03, all students will be awarded letter grades for coursework in which the student was enrolled. Please see our grade explanations below.

The letter grade of "A" carries a value of 4 grade points.

For example, if you complete a 3 credit hour class with a grade of "A", you have accumulated 12 grade points. If this was the only class you took, your GPA would be 4.0 (12 pts / 3 hrs).

The letter grade of "B" carries a value of 3 grade points.

For example, if you complete a 3 credit hour class with a grade of "B", you have accumulated 9 grade points. If this was the only class you took, your GPA would be 3.0 (9 pts / 3 hrs).

The letter grade of "C" carries a value of 2 grade points.

For example, if you complete a 3 credit hour class with a grade of "C", you have accumulated 6 grade points. If this was the only class you took, your GPA would be 2.0 (6 pts / 3 hrs).

The letter grade of "D" carries a value of 1 grade point.

For example, if you complete a 3 credit hour class with a grade of "D", you have accumulated 3 grade points. If this was the only class you took, your GPA would be 1.0 (3 pts / 3 hrs). Students who earn 6 credits hours with a GPA of less than 2.0 will be placed on Academic Probation.

The grade of "D" may be considered unsatisfactory progress in some programs. Check the catalog to determine if your program allows "D" grades.

The letter grade of "F" carries a value of 0 grade points.

For example, if you complete a 3 credit hour class with a grade of "F", you have accumulated 0 grade points. If this was the only class you took, your GPA would be 0.0 (0 pts / 3 hrs). Students who earn 6 credits hours with a GPA of less than 2.0 will be placed on Academic Probation.

The best way to increase your GPA to recover from a failing grade is by repeating the course. The latest attempt of the repeated course will be calculated into the GPA, and the prior attempt(s) will be excluded from the GPA, but still appear on the transcript as part of the permanent record.

This normally indicates students have completed a major portion of the work in a class and, for reasons approved by the instructor, are prevented from completing the amount of coursework required during the regular college term.

Students must complete the coursework in the timeframe established by the instructor, up to one calendar year, in order for the “I” to be changed to a letter grade. Student and instructor must enter into a written agreement describing the work to be completed, the grading criteria, and the time frame for completion. Upon satisfactory completion of all work by the student, the instructor will initiate an appropriate grade change.

After one year, if all requirements are not met, the “I” will change to a permanent grade of “F” on the student’s academic record.

With the consent of the instructor, the one-year limit may be extended by the instructor, the department chair or dean. The written agreement must be given to the department chair, who, if an instructor leaves the employ of St. Louis Community College, will assure evaluation of any work that might be completed.

Students who make progress in a course, but do not complete the predetermined minimum amount of course work may, at the discretion of the instructor, be given a PR so long as the PR grade was approved as an option for the course itself.

This symbol represents no credits earned and carries no grade point value. Students are permitted to take the course again, but must pay tuition a second time.

This signifies that credit has been earned by examination or prior learning assessment. This type of credit does not meet the residency requirement for graduation.

To learn more about Credit for Prior Learning, please visit our Credit for Prior Learning webpage.

The grade of "T" signifies the student has no intent to earn credit for the purposes of graduation or GPA. It carries no implication concerning class attendance or skill accomplishment.

The same fees and requirements as regular class members are expected. Students may change from audit to credit status or credit to audit status only during the period in which the 50 percent refund policy is in effect.

Auditing students are expected to meet the prerequisites and pay the required fees as credit status students.

The grade of "TR" indicates that the student transferred in classes from another school with a grade of C or better

The grade of "TR" is not included in the GPA.

The grade of "TD" indicates that the student transferred in classes from another school with a grade of D.

The grade of "TD" is not included in the GPA.

The grade of "S" indicates the awarding of credit. The earned credits count toward graduation, but are not used in GPA calculations.

Grades of S or U can be awarded only in courses approved for this purpose under guidelines developed by the college.

The grade of "U" indicates that no credit was awarded. It is not used in GPA calculations.

Grades of S or U can be awarded only in courses approved for this purpose under guidelines developed by the college.

The grade of "W" indicates that the student withdrew from the course.

Calculating GPA is pretty simple. Please see the example below for Louis Archer who took 4 classes in his first semester at STLCC.

Class - Grade Grade Points Credit Hours Accumulated Points
MTH 050 - PR N/A N/A N/A
ENG 079 - B 3 3 9
ENG 101 - B 3 3 9
COM 101 - A 4 3 12
Total   9 30

Louis ended his first semester with a 3.33 GPA (30 Accumulated Points / 9 Credit Hours). Still have questions? Please see the grade explanations above to learn more.

The best way to increase your GPA is by repeating the course where you previously earned a below average or failing grade.

The latest attempt of the repeated course will be calculated into the GPA, and the prior attempt(s) will be excluded from the GPA, but still appear on the transcript as part of the permanent record.
