EML Placement

The EML Placement Evaluation is for non-native speakers of English who want to take college-credit English for Multilingual Learners (EML) classes at STLCC. The evaluation helps place students in the right EML course level before they register.

If you are a beginner English learner or want free English classes for daily life and work, English as a Second Language (ESL) may be a better place to start.

The EML placement evaluation includes:

  1. A writing sample.
  2. The ESL ACCUPLACER test.
  3. An interview.

Please note that you must complete the writing sample and ESL ACCUPLACER before you can do your interview.

How to Complete the EML Placement Evaluation

Apply to STLCC

Complete the free online application for STLCC. After you apply, you will get a student number called an A# in a few days. If you already have an A#, you can start with Step 2.

Take the Placement Test

Go to an STLCC testing center and ask for the EML Placement Test.

Before you go:

  • You do not need an appointment.
  • The test takes about two hours.
  • Please arrive early enough to finish before the testing center closes.

What you will do:

  • Write an essay on paper. You will choose one of two essay questions and have 30 minutes to write.
  • Take the ESL ACCUPLACER test on a computer. This test includes reading, language and listening sections. You may take as much time as you need.

After the test:

  • Testing center staff will give you the contact information for an EML Placement Coordinator.
  • You must email the coordinator to set up your interview.

Complete Your Interview

The interview is the last step of the EML Placement Evaluation.

What to know:

  • You must contact the EML Placement Coordinator to schedule the interview.
  • You and the coordinator will choose a time to meet on campus.
  • The interview takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

What happens next:

  • You will receive your placement results.
  • You will learn your English level and which classes to take first.
  • You will also get information about how to register.

If you have questions, contact Recruitment and Outreach or an EML Placement Coordinator.
